Sharing is caring!
I recently asked my audience to send me some questions about my mobile DJ business so that I could record a Q&A video for them. As a female DJ and mobile DJ business owner, who has been DJing 24 years I have learned a lot about what works and what doesn’t work. So let’s get into it.
Question 1: Do you ask your clients for the type of music they want you to play?
Absolutely! For private events this is essential. When you are doing private events you are getting paid a lot more than your local bar gig so it’s imperative to get a playlist from your client. You will always add in your own songs of course but you will at least know what kind of sets you can incorporate that will make your client happy.
Question 2: What is your favorite part of being a great DJ?
This question is so sweet since this person is saying I am a great female DJ. Well, my favorite part of being a successful DJ is pretty simple. I LOVE making people dance. I just love creating an experience for people that makes them want to move their bodies, sing along, smile and truly be in the moment on that dance floor. Music is a universal power that brings people together and if I can create a dance set that facilitates this experience I say YES!
Question 3: What softwares do you use for your DJ business?
So this is a three fold question since there are three main softwares I use for my DJ business.
Software 1: Serato DJ Pro
I absolutely love Serato DJ Pro. I have made plenty of “ how to” videos on my instagram page and Youtube page on how to use this software. This is also the software I teach in my “How To DJ Course – From Beginner To Nightclub Ready”.
Serato DJ pro is my go to software for private event DJ gigs. If I were to start doing nightlife gigs again full time I would use Rekordbox since most nightclubs have Pioneer CDJ 2000’s or 3000’s and these use Rekordbox.
Software 2: Honeybook
So this software is more for administrative use. It’s how I am literally able to streamline my mobile DJ business. Honeybook is a client relationship management system where you can input every client’s name and email and keep track of everything.
You can create workflows for every part of your event process with each client. For instance, you can have an email welcome series for new wedding client’s or corporate clients. The emails are already in the system so you just have to tweak the name of the person. So this way you don’t have to manually write each email every time you get an inquiry.
Besides email workflows you can create categories for where your inquiries are coming from. I have clients that come from Google, client referrals, vendor referrals, Instagram, etc. I have created these categories in Honeybook so I can then see reports on how many inquiries I am getting from each. I can also see how much revenue I am making and how many inquiries are converting
Honeybook has allowed me to be able to track my data and fastrack following up with clients so I only have to spend 15 minutes a day on this.
Software 3: The Vibo DJ App
The Vibo DJ app is how I ask my clients to share their playlist requests with me. It’s an app that clients can use on their phones making the music selection process super fun and easy to use.
I have different templates for different types of events. I am able to create a template for weddings, corporate, birthday parties etc. There are templates already in the app itself and you can personalize however you like.
The Vibo DJ app also makes prepping for DJ gigs so much easier since it works with Serato, Traktor and Rekodbox. The app has a desktop scanner so you can scan your library and then download the playlist in the app and drag the playlists created into your DJ software of choice. It’s a win win for the client and DJ!
