As per the New York Times article this past weekend, the wedding boom is coming! Which leads me to believe that many of you are thinking about music for your wedding reception formalities. I have made playlists for many formalities but here is one specifically for mother and son dance songs. I often get asked for help from my clients when picking out this song, since this isn’t always the easiest song to figure out. Therefore, I made a playlist with my top 25 songs for you. Tip #1
My first tip is to think of a genre of music that either YOU love or your mom loves. So perhaps you’re a hip hop guy but not sure that will translate with your mom’s taste. Well, your mom might surprise you if you pick something tasteful and maybe a little more old school. R&B and hip hop tracks cross over as well so perhaps something like “ A Song for Mama” by Boyz II Men won’t seem too hardcore for mom. Lastly, dancing to a 90’s jam might take the pressure off the whole thing anyway. Which leads me to my next tip.
Tip #2
Pick a decade that either you or your mom loves! My favorite decade in music is the 70’s. I just love that the 70’s were the birth of so many genres in music. Everything is so funky and raw! That’s not to say there wasn’t bad music in the 70’s. God knows how many awful disco tunes were out then. Regardless of the bad music that was out at that time, picking out a decade will narrow down your search. Furthermore, it will help you and your mom get into a discussion about it that could be super fun!
Tip #3
Well, let’s say you and your mom can’t see eye to eye on picking out a song. You both might have the absolute opposite taste in music! Your mom might be into classical and jazz and you only like music from the 2000’s. Well, I hate to say it but you might just be screwed. NAH, just kidding! I mean this is a tough position to be in. My advice to you is to let mom pick the song. That’s right, I said it. Mom birthed you into this world so let her have her dance with her son on his wedding day to a song SHE loves.
