How Much Does a Photoshoot Cost for NYC DJs?

Coordinating a photoshoot for a team of NYC DJs sounds pretty simple but there are lots of moving parts.  First of all, how much does a photoshoot cost?  Secondly, how do we style them?  And third, who do we get to photograph them?  Not to mention picking out the right studio for the photoshoot.  So let’s go through step by step how this photoshoot went for TCM DJ Event’s team of NYC DJs.

Finding Your Photographer

As owner and DJ at TCM DJ Events, I never coordinated a photoshoot for a team before.  So I was a bit nervous that I would get things terribly wrong.  Well, finding a photographer sort of happened naturally.  Last summer I had done some lifestyle shots with an amazing photographer I met in a MasterMind.  And funny enough, Josh Levinson of JKL Photography approached me about DJing his wedding at the same time I was looking for a photographer for my shoot.  So I figured, hey let’s barter.  You do this shoot for me and I’ll DJ your wedding.  So we agreed!

Photographer Cost

Getting a professional photographer you trust will settle your nerves for sure.  But since we decided to barter I can’t share my price.  I did ask around and I would say a photoshoot for 3 hours for a team of 5 can range anywhere from 1k-3k.  It really depends on experience and if you will be needing lots of retouching afterwards.

I asked Josh about art direction and he said he could work with a mood board.  Well, part of being CEO of a company is knowing your strengths and weaknesses.  I was blessed with incredible musicality but when it comes to visuals I am not so gifted.  I knew I needed to get help.  Luckily, I have an amazingly talented friend who does art direction for fashion and music icons like Nicky Minaj, Jlo and Kim Kardashian. 

Finding Your Art Director

Chris Sollinger of Soda Jones came up with an 80’s and black turtleneck inspired mood board for me.  He expressed that simple is the best.  He even told me not to get a professional makeup artist since our faces would get touched up afterwards.  Let me tell you, I trusted this man implicitly and told my team  to do the same.  I’m so glad I did because I couldn’t be happier with the results.

Here is a breakdown of what I spent on my photoshoot for my team of NYC DJs:

 

  1. FD Photo studio in LIC – $24.99 an hour (blocked 3 hours)
  2. Photographer – Bartered so $0 but usually (1k-3k for 3 hours)
  3. Art Direction – My friend, so $0 but usually starts at 1k per hour.
  4. Supplies (turtle necks, paper for hats & sunglasses) – $75
  5. Hats made by my assistant, supplies + assistant fee who created hats $90
