Breaking Barriers as a Female DJ
Let’s be real: being a female DJ, particularly in the U.S., is no walk in the park. The DJ industry is still predominantly male, but we’re out here making serious waves.
According to DJ Times only 19% of women are DJs which just seems idiotic to me to think about honestly. Even with that statistic, I feel being a woman in this industry has open more doors than if I were a man.
We’re seeing more female DJs headlining festivals, breaking into mainstream radio, and owning their space in genres like house, hip-hop, and electronic music. Women are also producing more and more which is so inspiring to see!

When we talk about trailblazing female DJs, it’s impossible not to mention incredible talents like Peggy Gou, Blond:ish, MJ Nebrada, DJ Michelle, Cristina Lazic, Mëstiza, and Chloé Caillet.
I will write another post getting into their bodies of work but I did include their Instagram links above so you can go down the rabbit hole of these bad ass women in music today.
The Future of Women in DJing
As we head into a new year, I’m excited about the future for female DJs. More women are stepping into the DJ booth and owning their craft.
We’re starting to see more female representation at major music festivals, and a growing sense of community among women in the industry. While the stats still show that only 19% of DJs in the U.S. are women, I can feel that number rising.
