Sharing is caring!
Starting a mobile DJ business has its pros and cons, but is definitely worth it if you want to work consistently as a full time DJ. As someone who struggled to get consistent DJ gigs for quite some time, DJ Nicole Otero breaks down the 6 steps it took to start her successful mobile DJ business.
Step 1 - DJing Nightlife Events
It’s imperative that you DJ bar gigs, lounges or nightclubs before starting your mobile DJ company. After all, you don’t just want to be the type of DJ that has only DJ’d weddings or Bar Mitzvah’s.
The reason for DJing nightlife events first is simple, it’s the best way to learn how to read a room. This isn’t a skill you can learn live streaming at home folks! And you don’t want to struggle with this when you are getting paid 2k-10k per gig while playing at a private event!
Step 2 - Transitioning To Private Events
Before you go all in with your mobile DJ company I recommend DJing for another private events company first. This way you learn about timeline’s, MCing, equipment and of course playlist strategies for rocking private events.
Step 3 - Don’t Invest Too Much on Your DJ setup
A lot of DJ’s get turned off by the investment cost of a mobile DJ setup so they just keep DJing nightlife gigs for low fees. The thing is that you really don’t need to overspend when it comes to getting your first mobile DJ setup.
You can get used gear and you also don’t need too many speakers since most private event gigs are less than 100 people. You can honestly get a mobile DJ setup for less than 5k especially if you get used gear in good condition.
If you would like to hear about the other 3 steps (pssssst, they are really good!) you can watch DJ Nicole Otero’s Youtube video below. The video goes more in depth as well.
