Affordable DJ Gear Under $500

When you are first thinking about getting started as a DJ, the price of equipment is a major factor.  That’s why I listed my top 5 DJ setup tips to help get you started.  The best part is that all of the equipment minus your laptop adds up to less than $500.  If you want the complete checklist with tiered pricing and links, download my free Ultimate Guide DJ Setup Checklist here.  Finally, you can check out my video below for a run through.

Why A DJ Controller

I recommend getting started with a DJ controller since it’s an affordable way to get your feet wet.  Turntables like techniques can start around $400 each.  Then you still have to get a DJ mixer, headphones, DJ software and monitors.  You see, with a DJ controller you have two turntables and a DJ mixer all in one.  They are much lighter to carry than turntables, making them great to bring to gigs.  Finally, they are a lot cheaper too!

Entry level DJ controllers start at $299.  That’s a far cry from spending 1k on decks alone.  Depending on your budget, that leaves you room to go fancy on your headphones or monitors.

Once you become a more experienced DJ you can then decide if you want a different at home DJ set up.  You can always sell your old set up and purchase a new one.

DJ Software

There are a few DJ softwares out there.  I think the two most popular ones for your computer are Serato DJ Pro and Traktor.  They both essentially do the same thing.  They just have some slightly different features.  I would say most club set ups are compatible with Serato DJ Pro.  I also love Serato DJ Pro’s feature that allows you to DJ on just your computer.  That feature is called Serato Play and is a GREAT way to get your feet wet DJing without breaking the bank.

Check out my DJ Masterclass here where I give a free training on how to use Serato Play.

Headphones & Monitors

There are so many options to choose from when it comes to picking out your headphones and monitors.  I prefer Audio Technicas for headphones since they are amazing for mixing as well as for djing.  If you are looking for more bass response though then Pioneer is a great brand to go with.  As for monitors, I love QSC’s.  They are indoor and outdoor speakers so you could bring them out to gigs when you’re not using them at home.
