THE TRUTH ABOUT FEMALE DJS IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY

It’s crazy how we are WELL into the 21st century and female DJs are still quite the novelty. I can’t tell you how often I hear “WOW, I’ve never seen a female DJ before, how cool!”. Probably every gig honestly and that’s 20 years in the game. That was when I was djing internationally in the underground deep house scene. I also STILL hear that now that I run TCM DJ Events. I’m sure my other female wedding djs in NYC and NJ hear these comments as well.

So why all the fuss about female DJs? Well, did you know that only 19% of DJs are actually women? That’s a staggering number considering we are not talking about rocket science here. It’s literally just putting a needle to the record. Well, nowadays with modern technology pushing a button on a DJ controller. Not that being a good DJ let alone a GREAT DJ is as easy as that but STILL.

Well, it’s no secret that beat making and matching beats was typically happening in boys clubs. Although I’m sure there were girls back in the day doing it in their dad’s garages and figuring out how to build transistors for their radios. I personally wasn’t one of those tech geeks. I was just a music geek that needed an outlet for performance in music. Even as a singer and pianist I needed something that was more dance music related. I found that with DJing.

Just a few amazing female DJs!

So let’s take a walk down memory lane with some of the female pioneer DJs like Spinderella from Salt N Pepa, DJ Rap who stormed the UK Jungle scene in the 90’s and then became an LA superstar DJ. If you’re not up on Nina Kraviz then you are missing out on a russian techno goddess. Although there are so many more to mention like Maya Jane Coles who is also a prolific producer I would like to mention some of our own local talent.

I would like to mention a couple of our DJs starting with myself, owner/DJ of TCM DJ Events and my right hand DJ Jenn Love. We are both native New Yorkers born and raised in Queens. I come from an underground deep house background and Jenn’s favorite style is hip hop. We can both mix up any genres though and LOVE the challenge that weddings bring on since you do need to know how to appease an audience of many generations.
